Doc asked to pay compensation for wrong diagnose

Coimbatore: The district consumer court here has ordered a lady doctor to pay Rs.30,000 to a student for informing her that she was pregnant, after carrying out a urine test.

The unmarried 19-year old student had approached a doctor on the city outskirts, as her montly periods were delayed, on March 10 last. After carrying out urine test, the unmarried student was informed that she was pregnant. The doctor had advised her to come for scan test and the next day it was confirmed about the pregnancy.

The student met another woman doctor and also a primary health centre in Karamadai on the outskirs. Tests conducted by the doctors there confirmed that she was not pregnant and came to know that the first doctor had wrongly diagnosed.

The student sent a lawyer's notice to the first doctor and also filed case in the Consumer Court seeking Rs 20 lakh for causing mental agony to her and her family.

The doctor, in her reply explained that the student was told to appear before her for a scan test and there was no dereliction of duty from her side.

After hearing both the sides on Friday, the judge, Sriramulu ordered the doctor to pay Rs 30,000, as compensation for causing mental agony to the student. He also ordered to pay the student Rs.1,000 as court charges.
