Govt to respond on rescheduling of parliament
Sunday, October 19, 2008 15:23 [IST]

New Delhi: With the Left and the Right questioning its timing, Government is expected to come out with its response tomorrow on the ticklish issue of rescheduling of the current Parliament session.

The Congress-led coalition has come under trouble right from the word go as the Leader of the Opposition L K Advani has questioned the status, timing and schedule of the current session which is scheduled to last till November 21.

The case of the Left parties is no different which are accusing the Government of "scuttling the voice of Parliament" by bringing down the sittings to a record low of 30 days so far this year.

Left parties want a full-fledged winter session while BJP and its allies are accusing the government of being "not serious" with Parliament by convening the session in the midst of the festive season and a host of Assembly elections.

Opposition leaders say that during the month-long session, there has already been a proposal for a ten-day holiday from October 25 to November 5 in view of festivals such as Diwali and Chhat Puja.

CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury has questioned the "jettisoning" of Monsoon session, which he says, was unheard of and recalled that even during Emergency days all sessions were held, though in truncated form.

Despite the allround attack, government has been so far on a low key on the issue with its managers fearing that its numbers were fragile.

The refrain in the ruling circles is one of playing safe through fewer sittings of the current session of Parliament which could be the last of the 14th Lok Sabha. Elections to the Lok Sabha are scheduled to be held before May next year.
