New Delhi: "It must be a bomb blast" -- this was the thought that first came to the minds of some residents of an east Delhi area where an under-construction Delhi Metro bridge gave way shattering the Sunday calm.
The scene at the spot was of chaos and confusion with heaps of mangled iron and pieces of concrete slab lying all around. Two cars, two trailers of Metro and a blueline bus were damaged when a 400-tonne segment of the bridge fell along with a launcher -- a machine used to lift the slabs.
"I heard a big sound and I thought it was a bomb blast. I rushed out just to see the bridge has collapsed, trapping the bus," said a resident who stays near the accident spot in Lakshmi Nagar area.
With the serial blasts fresh in his mind, another resident of the locality also felt that it was an explosion. "These days, we are vary scared about our safety on the roads. You don t know what is in store for you when you step out of your house," Amritesh said.
As they heard the noise, people from neighbouring areas came out of their houses and rushed to spot. A number of youngsters were seen clicking pictures of the accident site using their mobile phones.
Policemen in large were seen regulating the crowd as the body of the bus driver was pulled out of the wreckage and the injured were shifted to hospitals.
"Within seconds of the mishap, I was at the spot. I saw a crane-type device falling on Toyota Innova car.
"I was sleeping and woke up hearing a huge sound. I thought it was an earthquake and rushed outside only to see the bus under the debris," said Anand Kumar, who lives near the accident site.
