Taiyuan (China): Five people were killed and 37 others injured Sunday morning in a coal mine accident in China's northern province of Shanxi, officials said.

The accident at around 6.51 a.m. in Luliang City occurred when the rope of a cable car carrying the miners to the ground snapped, officials of the Shenzhou Mining Co. Ltd., said.

There were 42 workers on the cable car at the time of the accident.

Three miners died on the spot, while two died at the Luliang People's Hospital, an official said. The injured are being treated at the hospital.

The Shenzhou mine produces 840,000 tonnes of coal annually. Authorities have ordered to halt production after the accident. Currently, an investigation is underway.
