Nine Chinese kidnapped in Sudan
Monday, October 20, 2008 12:39 [IST]

Khartoum: Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped nine Chinese workers from an oil field near the restive western Sudanese region of Darfur, the Chinese embassy has said.

A spokesman of the embassy told reporters Sunday the workers of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) were kidnapped by militants at the Kordofan state in the south.

No armed group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

The embassy said it has activated an emergency management mechanism and is in close contacts and consultations with the Sudanese authorities for rescue of the kidnapped.
