Pakistan violated ceasefire pact 58 times

New Delhi: Pakistan had violated the five-year-old pact on ceasefire 58 times since the ceasefire agreement came into effect from November 2003,the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Replying to a question in Parliament, Defence Minister A K Antony said since January 2008,Indian positions on the Line of Control (LoC) have been fired upon 34 times, while the total ceasefire violation by Pakistan has occurred on 58 counts.

On measures taken up by the government to prevent recurrence of such incidents, Antony said, protests are registered through the established mechanisms of hotline, flag meetings as well as weekly talks between the Director General of Military Operations.

"Strong retaliatory action is taken against any attempts of violation of the LoC, while maintaining adequate restraint to prevent escalation," he added.
