Durban: South African President Kgalema Motlanthe and his deputy Baleka Mbetha today wished Hindus in the country and around the world a "Happy Deepawali".
"Deepawali, which is known as a Festival of Lights, symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and it is a time when we are brought together as a nation to strengthen the hand of goodwill across religions, races and creed," President Motlanthe, who recently visited India, said in a statement.
He said that the festival brings a message of unity and is a time for families and communities to unite in the African spirit of Ubuntu to spread a meaningful dialogue and shared respect amongst all South African citizens.
"In celebrating the triumph of light over darkness, Deepawali compels us to reflect on the importance of knowledge over ignorance and invites us to apply this message in our personal and public lives," he added.
The President urged all South Africans to assist in lighting the lamp of Deepawali, which encourages harmony in our different cultures and promote collaborative action to make South Africa a better country where everyone respects religious freedom.
