Beijing: Chinese state media has reported that an accident during bridge construction in southwestern China's Sichuan province has killed 11 people and seriously injured 12 others.
Xinhua News Agency said today the workers died when a steel cable snapped, sending a crane carrying 23 people crashing to the ground. Nine died immediately and two others died in hospital.
Xinhua said local officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
The incident underscores major public safety concerns in China, such as the failure to enforce more stringent work safety measures at the country's notoriously deadly mines, construction sites and other industrial work environments.
