Wednesday, October 29, 2008 21:13 [IST]

New Delhi: Hailing the election of Mohamed Nasheed as Malidivian President as a "historic" occasion, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured him of India s commitment to "further strengthening and deepening of relations" between the two countries.

"This is a historic occasion for the people of the Maldives. As Maldives enters a new era of democracy, I am confident that Maldives will attain even greater heights under your leadership and stewardship," Singh said in his congratulatory message to the President elect of Maldives.

"I wish to assure you of India's commitment to the further strengthening and deepening of our relations with the Maldives. I look forward to working with you towards this end for mutual benefit of our two peoples," Singh said.

The elections in the Indian Ocean archipelago saw the ouster of the Maldives longest-serving President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
