Washington: The United States said Wednesday it is sending its top envoy on Africa to the Democratic Republic of Congo capital of Kinshasa as it voiced "deep concern" over fighting in the country's east.
Jendayi Frazer, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, "is going to be in Kinshasa tomorrow (Thursday)," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.
"It's of deep concern to us," he said of the violence.
Rebels in the DRC closed Wednesday on Goma, a strategic eastern city, sparking chaotic scenes as government forces and 45,000 refugees scrambled to leave.
