Sri Lanka troops capture key rebel coastal base
Friday, October 31, 2008 11:45 [IST]

Colombo: Sri Lankan troops today took control of a key rebel-held town on the island s northwest coast through which the Tamil Tigers have smuggled weapons, the defence ministry said.

"Troops established their writ over the entire Nachchikuda village, a prominent Sea Tiger bastion," the ministry said.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had used the base in the picturesque village as a weapons hub, bringing them in on ships and then transporting them over land to the frontlines, the military said.

The Tigers withdrew from Nachchikuda earlier this week as ground troops advanced towards the village, but not before soldiers inflicted "heavy casualties", the ministry said.

There was no immediate comment from the LTTE, who have fought since 1972 for a separate state for minority Tamils in the majority-Sinhalese nation. Tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict.

Government troops are currently trying to capture the northern town of Kilinochchi, which the LTTE has been using as its main political base for nearly a decade.

Earlier today, Sri Lankan war planes bombed a Tiger training base for suicide attackers deep inside rebel-controlled Mullaittivu district, the military said.

The defence ministry did not release casualty figures, saying it could hamper ongoing operations. In the past, the ministry issued daily casualty tolls that showed heavy losses for the rebels as compared with the army.

The pro-rebel Tamilnet website said one boy was killed today by government shelling in Mullaittivu.
