Flooding kills 20 people in central Vietnam
Friday, October 31, 2008 19:35 [IST]
Hanoi: Floods triggered by heavy rains killed 20 people in central Vietnam this week, including five children, disaster officials said today.

The storms swept across three central provinces from Monday to Friday, inundating homes.

Eleven people, including four young students, were killed in the worst-hit province of Nghe An, provincial disaster official Nguyen Duc Duong said. The students were swept away while walking home from school.

In Ha Tinh province to the south of Nghe An, six people were killed in the floods, disaster official Ha Duc Tro said.

Bui Duc Thai, an official in Quang Ngai, said three people were killed there, including a 2-year-old boy.

Officials said today that the rains in the central provinces had begun to ease.

In Hanoi to the north, heavy rains flooded streets Friday, but no deaths were reported.

Vietnam is prone to floods, which kill hundreds each year.
