Cheap rice turns a major poll plank in polls
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 17:39 [IST]
Raipur: Providing cheap rice has become the main poll plank in Chhattisgarh as campaigning trail gathered momentum in recent days.

To counter the BJP's aggressive campaigning centered around Rs three a kilogram rice to the poor - which the BJP government had launched in January 2007, Congress leader Ajit Jogi has declared that rice at Rs 2 a kg will be provided to all segments of the people, if Congress comes to power in the state.

With this the stage is set for a rice centric campaigning in the state.

"If Congress comes to power, we will give rice at Rs 2 a kg to all segments of the people for the next five years," Jogi said while addressing a public meeting at Tumgaon in Mahasamund district on Tuesday. The former Chief Minister is the sitting MP from Mahasamund constituency.

He, in fact, alleged that the Rs 3 a kg rice to the poor by the BJP government in the state was launched aiming at the election this year.

"For four years the government did not give any attention towards the poor but in the election year they have come out with the rice scheme," Jogi said.
The former Congress Chief Minister asked the crowd to overthrow this BJP government which only announce during the election year.
