New Delhi:Sharp differences between the local units of the BJP and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal on the use of party symbols for contesting the city polls has led senior leaders to intervene in the matter.
Delhi SAD president Manjit Singh told PTI that senior party leader and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will be in the capital to meet senior leaders of the saffron party, including L K Advani, to convince them to let party candidates fight on the symbol scale instead of the lotus .
"They (BJP) want us to fight on their party symbol lotus whereas we are keen to to contest on our own symbol Scale this time," he said.
While the BJP has been arguing that the lotus symbol being popular will garner more vote for the SAD candidates in the November 29 polls, its ally felt that it was high time the party made its presence felt in the capital with the scale .
"We had fought on lotus symbol in the MCD elections but no more. Anyway, now we have left it on the senior leaders to decide on the poll symbol," Singh added.
The SAD has already announced its candidates for the four seats left by the saffron party. Ravinder Khurana will contest from Adarsh Nagar, Manjit Singh Sirsa from Jungpura, Jitender Singh Shunti from Shahadra and Avtar Singh Hit from Rajouri Garden.
Upbeat over its performance in municipal elections last year when it bagged seven wards, SAD is confident of making a foray in the Assembly hoping to cash in on the increasing percentage of Sikhs in some constituencies following the recent delimitation. Source : PTI
