Ganga as National River election gimmick: BJP
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 18:28 [IST]
New Delhi: BJP today alleged that the declaration of the Ganga as a "National River" by the UPA was a "pre-election gimmick".

"It smacks of politics. It seems nothing but one of pre-election gimmicks of the UPA regime without any real concern for the river," party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters here.

The same UPA government has been inactive on the ambitious river-linking project which could have been a solution to many of the floods and droughts in the country, he alleged.

"The announcement lacks any action plan for the river. If it is just cleaning and purification, then it will face the same fate as that of the past clean Ganga projects," he added.
