Congress promises 50 percent job quota
Friday, November 07, 2008 19:57 [IST]

Raipur: The opposition Congress party in Chhattisgarh Friday promised to provide rice at Rs. two per kilogram, free power and interest-free loans to farmers besides 50 percent reservation to women in government jobs.

In an election manifesto the party issued here, the Congress promised to enact a law to enforce restrictions on purchase of agricultural land from the farmers in the state.

The state goes to polls Nov 14 for 39 seats while remaining 51 segments will see voting Nov 20.

The Congress promised to launch a scheme, if it comes to power, to provide 35 kg rice to all sections, except the income tax payers, at just Rs.2 per kg.

The move is to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's existing scheme, 35 kg rice a month at Rs.3 a kg to more than 3.6 million families living below the poverty line in the state.
