Kathmandu:Under attack for cozying up with capitalists after coming to power, Nepal s Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai has vowed to establish "socialism" in the country. "We will never surrender before capitalists.
We will rather change them, said Bhattarai, the Finance Minister in the CPN-Maoist-led government in Nepal. The Maoist leader, who was speaking at a human rights function in the capital, underlined the difficulties ahead but said: "We are trying to implement Marxism scientifically. "It will take time to establish socialism, Bhattarai, who is also a top party ideologue, was quoted as saying in the media. A row has erupted in the CPN-Maoist as party harldliners are pushing for strict enforcement of ultra left ideology in the agenda of the government.
Hardliners have advocated "a communist republic" instead of pursuing the bourgeois parliamentary democracy. The Maoists, who waged a decade-long insurgency for the establishment of a communist republic in Nepal, joined mainstream politics after a 2006 peace deal with the interim government led by G. P. Koirala. The formation of the Maoist led government follows the Himalayan country s abolition of its unpopular 240-year-old monarchy on May 28 after the former rebels emerged as the largest party in the April 10 Constituent Assembly polls.
