Mumbai: In view of state government's orders on ban of cattle rearing, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the state Animal Husbandary department not to issue license permitting cattle shed owners to bring buffaloes from outside to the city.
"In 2006,the state issued notification banning cattle rearing and bringing buffaloes from outside to the city after the deluge on July 26 that year. However, due to some communication gap in the lower level officials at cattle licensing wing, they were issuing orders till recently. This has been stopped after we brought to their notice," said Kishore Gajbhiye, Additional Municipal Commissioner of BMC and incharge of public health.
Acting on a tip off, the BMC officials on Thursday intercepted nearly 10 vehicles filled with buffaloes near Dahisar Octroi Naka but they were shocked to see that all the permit documents were issued from the state's cattle license department.
"We even discussed about it with animal husbandary secretary Medha Gadgil who assured us that such things would not be repeated," Gajbhiye added.
Following the deluge and the subsequent havoc, the state government banned the rearing of cattle in Mumbai for hygienic reasons. The state government even identified a land at Bagcheri in Thane district to shift the Tabelas (cattle sheds). Source : PTI
