BJP seeks action against Sheila for speech
Saturday, November 08, 2008 20:29 [IST]

New Delhi: The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday complained to the Election Commission against Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit accusing her of violating the electoral code of conduct by making a political speech inside a mosque.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Mewa Ram Arya condemned the chief minister for her political speech inside a mosque at Moti Lal Nehru Marg and seeking votes for the party during the Friday prayers.

In his letter to the Election Commission, he demanded appropriate action against Dikshit and stated that she should be debarred from contesting election for her violation of the election code of conduct.

"Muslims in large numbers had gathered in the mosque near the Congress headquarters Friday for prayers. Dikshit suddenly entered the mosque at the time of prayers," Arya said.

"Many Muslim leaders walked out of the mosque in protest and several office-bearers of the mosque condemned her action. They told the chief minister she should not have done this and should not have used a religious place for political publicity," Arya added.

He further said: "The action of Dikshit shows her panic and hence she has violated the code of conduct by seeking votes like this after the notification of election. Perhaps, she has forgotten this."
