Indonesia executes Bali bombers, sparks clashes
Sunday, November 09, 2008 19:22 [IST]
Jakarta: Three Indonesian Muslim radicals were executed on Sunday for carrying out the deadly Bali bombings which had killed 202 people, sparking clashes between police and their supporters.

"At around 2245 IST the three convicted men on death row, Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra, were executed by firing squad," said attorney generals office spokesman Jasman Panjaitan. "The autopsy results show that all three are dead," he was quoted as saying by the official Antara news agency.

Amrozi, 47,his brother Mukhlas, 48,and ringleader Imam Samudra, 38 who were earlier found guilty of carrying out the 2002 Bali bombings, were killed with gun shots into their hearts.

The executions were carried out in Nusakambangan island off southern Java, TV One television reported. The 2002 attack targeted packed nightspots on the holiday island of Bali, killing more than 160 foreigners including 88 Australians, as well as 38 Indonesians.

Till their death the bombers expressed no remorse for their "infidel" victims and claimed they wanted to die as "martyrs." They were members of the Jemaah Islamiyah regional terror network, a group once linked to Al-Qaeda.

The bodies of Mukhlas and Amrozi -- the latter dubbed the "smiling assassin" for his courtroom antics -- arrived by helicopter at their village of Tenggulun in east Java. Their supporters clashed with police as grief as religious fervour boiled during their burial. Similar scenes were witnessed in the west Java town of Serang as Samudras body was paraded to
the graveyard, covered in a black cloth.

The bombers were sentenced to death in 2003. The executions were delayed due to legal challenges. The alleged mastermind of the Bali bombings Noordin Mohammad Top, is still at large.
