Twenty Afghans killed in suicide blast
Thursday, November 13, 2008 12:18 [IST]

Kabul: Twenty Afghan civilians and a U. S. Soldier were killed in a suicide attack on Thursday in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, a spokesman for the U. S. Military said.

The target of the attack was a convoy of US led troops on a road outside Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. Fifty six civilians were wounded, the spokesman told Reuters.

But a police officer in Kabul said seven people were killed in the attack, which followed Wednesday's suicide blasts in the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand.

Afghanistan is facing its worst spell of violence this year, the bloodiest since Taliban's overthrow in 2001.

The police officer said 69 people were wounded in Thursday's blast.
