Over two thousand detonators recovered from Sikkim
Monday, November 17, 2008 13:29 [IST]

Gangtok: In a major haul, the police have recovered 2312 detonators from a forest at Majhitar locality in South District of Sikkim, a police official said today.

The explosives were recovered on Saturday last during a search operation by police in the forest, South District SP G K Verma said.

The detonators were found lying near a cliff in the forest area which is located close to Sikkim-West Bengal border, he said.

Meanwhile, a senior police official ruled out any subversive design behind the recovery of the detonators and said that the explosives might have been abandoned by its owners.

In view of the construction of several hydro power projects in Sikkim where detonators or dynamites are used to blast boulders at the project sites, the recovery of detonators from various parts of the state from time to time has been a routine affair, he said.

However, the police department has taken the matter seriously and has directed the local cops to intensify checking throughout the forest and surrounding areas, the official added.
