Kathmandu: The main Opposition Nepali Congress will not join the Maoist-led government but would cooperate with the administration on the basis of merit, a senior leader of the party said today.
"There is no truth in the reports that Nepali Congress is considering the offer to join the government," NC vice president Ram Chandra Poudyal said today.
However, the Nepali Congress will extend cooperation to the government from outside on the basis of merit and demerits, Poudyal said at a function in Charikot near Kathmandu.
The leader also warned to launch an agitation if the Maoist-led government would not fulfill NC s nine-point demands submitted recently.
The demands include returning seized property, allowing displaced people to return to their homes, dissolving paramilitary structure of the Young Communist League and implementing peace agreements signed in the past, he said.
He added that NC will fulfil the role of a responsible Opposition party and take part in Constitution drafting process and help in taking the peace process to its logical end.
The NC leader also alleged "the Maoists still have the hangover of the decade-long insurgency which has prevented the Nepalese people to experience democracy in real sense.
