New Delhi: Blaming the political and bureaucratic set up of the country for holding back the much- awaited police reforms, country's first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi today said this has resulted in "insecurity and uncertainity" among people.
"Supreme Court's recommendations to implement police reforms in the states is still unimplemented due to lack of political will in the leaderships and vested interests of the bureaucracy," Bedi said at a seminar on National Value Crisis and Redressal here.
Bedi said because of delay in reforming the present police system, the common people are living under insecurity and uncertainty.
"State of police in the country is very serious as none is sure whether a complaint would be lodged when we will reach a police station or not," she said.
Noting that the economic development of the country is not possible until an "effective police system" is in place to guarantee people s security, she said, "There would be no long term economic development until we have a strong and effective police force."
Bedi who quit the police force last year after she was superseded by Y S Dadwal for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner, said, "I walked out of the police force, a job which had been very close to my heart, because of huge hypocrisy in governance."
The former police officer said there were very few people who are concerned for the reforms in the present police system. "Most of the chiefs in police force and bureaucracy are looking for their reemployment so that they would not loose the facilities they are enjoying," she claimed. Source : PTI
