Bangkok: Thailand's fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is set to return to active politics and will announce his comeback bid on Dec 14, a close ally and the ruling People Power Party (PPP) member of parliament Jatuporn Promphan said.
The Nation on its Online version reported that Jatuporn had told the daily the announcement would be made during the Mobile Truth Today television talk show to be held at the Supachalasai National Stadium here.
"Khun Thaksin will announce on Dec 14 that he will return to politics to fight to defend his name. He will no longer stand still. He has decided to come out to fight as he does not want to be attacked and cornered any more," Jatuporn said.
He said that Thaksin, who was ousted by the military on Sept 19,2006,would use eye-for-an-eye strategy to counter his enemies.
Thaksin returned briefly from exile in February and fled to Britain to avoid court charges.
On Nov 1,Thaksin addressed, via telephone from Hong Kong, his 60,000 supporters who had gathered at the Rajamangala Stadium here during the Mobile Truth Today programme. His brother-in-law, Somchai Wongsawat, is the current prime minister.
On reports that Thaksin had divorced his wife, Potjaman, in Hong Kong last week, Jatuporn said it was due to Thaksin s intention to return to politics, despite widespread belief in the Kingdom that it was staged to prevent the confiscation of their frozen assets by the authorities.
"Khun Thaksin and his wife had decided earlier, after the coup d etat in 2006,that they would divorce if he decided to return to politics. It is a promise between them. So, they decided to divorce now that Khun Thaksin will return to politics," he said.
