New Delhi: A railway official has been sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 16.70 lakhs by a special CBI court in Lucknow for misappropriating government funds.
K P Yadav, Chief Coaching Supervisor, had embezzled about Rs 16.9 lakh from the cash collected against booking of tickets while he was posted at Ayodhya Railway station as Supervisor during 1997-99,a CBI spokesman said here today.
Yadav was entrusted to collect all the cash from booking and reservation counters daily and deposit it in Railways Bank account on the subsequent day. Instead, he deposited only a part of it through treasury remittance notes.
He used to account for the entire cash by producing fake cash remittance notes to Divisional Cash Office, Allahabad duly supported by fake refund vouhers also known as Refund of Previous Day (ROPD).
These vouchers were issued in the name of booking clerks showing part-refund of cash against body Excess Fare Tickets and guard certificates issued from different stations of Northern India.
Through this process, he was able to siphon off money to the tune of Rs 4.35 lakh and 12.5 lakh in 1998 and 1999 respectively making a dent of total Rs 16.9 lakh in the railway coffers.
After investigating the case, the CBI filed two chargesheets in 2001 alleging misappropriation of funds. The court pronounced K P Yadav as guilty on 10 counts with punishments ranging from two to five years which will run concurrently.
