SP to make Batla encounter poll issue in Delhi
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 18:34 [IST]

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party would make its demand for judicial probe into the Batla House encounter a poll issue in the Delhi Assembly elections in a bid to woo minority voters.

The party, which has fielded 35 candidates for the 70-member assembly, is hoping to register a "sizeable" presence this time with emphasis being given on issues like Jamia Nagar encounter and subsequent crackdown on suspects of the September 13 Delhi blasts, besides local issues.

"We are strongly demanding a judicial enquiry into the Batla House shootout. It has always been an issue and will remain so," SP Delhi unit President Shyam Gambhir said.

The SP has been demanding a judicial probe into the incident since suspicion was raised on the genuineness of the shootout in which two suspected terrorist and a police officer were killed.

Party leader Amar Singh, who has been vociferously demanding an enquiry into the encounter, yesterday held a rally in the Okhla constituency under which the Jamia Nagar area falls.

Samajwadi Party has fielded Wasim Ahmed Ghazi from the constituency which has 43 per cent Muslim voters.

Singh has already held six meetings in different constituencies while its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is expected to hold several rallies in the national capital.

To add Bollywood colour to the campaigning, the SP will also rope in actresses-turned-politicians Jaya Bachchan and Jaya Prada for canvassing.

"We have also requested Jaya Bachchan to campaign for the party in Delhi polls," Gambhir said.

Abu Asim Azami, Azam Khan and Akhilesh Yadav are among other leaders who will hold the poll meetings here.
