Absconding BDO surrenders in court
Thursday, November 20, 2008 13:36 [IST]

Sitmarhi: An absconding block development officer (BDO) accused in an embezzlement case surrendered before a local court today and was sent to jail.

Arun Kumar Bhattacharya, absconding for the last five years, had applied for bail which was rejected by the sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Pupri, P K Srivastava, who sent him to jail custody for 14 days.

Bhattacharya as BDO of Chorout block of Sitamarhi district during 1997-2000 had allegedly withdrawn Rs 26 lakh from treasury meant for Indira Awas and other developmental schemes.

After receiving complaints of embezzlement of public money by the BDO, the then SDO, Pupri, had directed the police to lodge the FIR against him in 2003.

Bhattacharya was evading arrest since the SDJM court issued an arrest warrant against him in this connection.
