Former Assam minister dies

Dibrugarh: Former Assam minister and veteran Congress leader Haren Bhumij died here last night following protracted illness, family sources said.

Bhumij was Flood Control minister in the two terms of Hiteswar Saikia governments.

He was also a member of parliament representing Dibrugarh constiuency in the Lok Sabha.

A former professor of Kanoi College here in the 70s, Bhumij had joined the Congress inspired by then prime minister Indira Gandhi when he was the Dibrugarh university controller of examinations, the sources said.

The former minister was unwell for the last three months after he had suffered a stroke, the sources said.

He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter.
