Kolkata: A suspected ISI agent who was arrested here was today remanded to police custody till November 24.
Acting Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Soma Majumdar, remanded Nazrul Islam, a Bangladeshi, who had fled from a Rajasthan court lock up five years ago and against whom a red corner notice was issued by Bangladesh, to police custody.
The 52-year old Abdul Kasem alias Nazrul Islam alias Shah Alam alias Ratan was arrested in Jaisalmer by the Rajasthan police on September 9, 2002 under the Official Secrets Act for possessing secret military documents of the army. He had also admitted that he supplied secret miltary documents to the ISI.
He had fled from the Jaisalmer court lockup on June 25, 2003 and had lain low for five years before his arrest from Hardford Lane under New Market police station in central Kolkata yesterday. The police said that Islam would be taken for interrogation by the Mekhliganj police in Cooch Behar district since the army documents originated from there. The man hailed from Noakhali district in Bangladesh.
