NCM team to visit violence-affected Dhule
Friday, November 21, 2008 11:43 [IST]
New Delhi: Expressing concern over the Ocotber 5 communal riots in North Maharashtra's Dhule town in which four persons were killed last month, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has decided to send a fact-finding team to the Congress-NCP ruled state.

"A team of the Commission will pay a spot visit in the violence-affected areas in Dhule Town and submit a detailed report on the incident's origin and the administration's role in containing it. The NCM will apprise the central and state governments of its findings and recommendations next month," NCM Chairman Mohammed Shafi Qureshi told PTI today.

Four persons were killed and more than 80 injured, including policemen and an additional collector, in the clashes that began when some people, belonging to a particular community, allegedly tore off banners of Hindu Rakshan Samiti that appealed to people to attend a meeting in the town.

The incident led to clashes between the members of the two community.

Rioters indulged in heavy stone-pelting, looted shops, torched vehicles in Azad Nagar, Gurudwara, Mogalai, Bhangar Bazaar and Ekveera Devi temple areas of the town.

As tension mounted, members of both the communities had to be temporarily shifted out to safer places in the state.

The Commission members will visit the troubled areas to get the eyewitnesses account of the incidents and will also hold meetings with the state officials later.

Earlier, the Commission had sought a report from the Maharashtra government regarding the violence. Although, the government sent its report to the Commission regarding the incident and the action taken, NCM was not satisfied with it and hence decided to make a visit to the state to inquire into the incident, sources said.
