Government will provide protection to RSS leaders
Friday, November 21, 2008 19:17 [IST]

New Delhi: The Congress party Friday said the government will provide security to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) leaders if there is any threat to their life.

Reacting to news reports that Abhinav Bharat, a right wing Hindu group that is accused of carrying out the Malegaon blast, had plotted to kill senior RSS leaders, Shakeel Ahmad, Congress spokesperson, said: “It is the duty of the government to provide security to every citizen. If the leaders of RSS have a threat to their life from Abhinav Bharat then the government will provide security to them.”

The Hindustan Times Friday reported that that members of Abhinav Bharat had plotted to kill RSS general secretary Mohan Bhagwat and senior leader Indraeesh, who manages the Rashtriya Muslim Manch.

However, Ahmad said that there is a need to probe the issue to know if there was any hidden agenda to fuel communalization in society.

“It is a serious issue, it needs to be probed further to know the real motive of this plan. It could also be a part of a larger game plan to kill a senior RSS leader and put the blame on a particular community to fuel the feelings of hatred in the society,” Ahmad said.

He said the Congress is opposed to every kind of terrorism, whether 'jehadi' or terrorism by members of the Sangh Parivar.

“We are committed to fighting terrorism without making any distinctions based on caste, creed and religion as is done by the leaders of BJP,” Ahmad said.
