Six-day-old girl thrown out of car is safe: Doctors
Sunday, November 23, 2008 17:08 [IST]

New Delhi: She gurgles happily, blissfully unaware that hours ago she escaped near death - flung out of a moving car, a hungry dog shaking the polythene bag she was wrapped in, then miraculously spotted by a woman and saved by police. All at the tender age of six days.

The baby, who was transferred to an orphanage on Saturday, is "healthy" and "pretty", said doctors at the orphanage.

The baby was found alive inside a bag outside the Kali Mata temple on Bangla Sahib road in central Delhi on Friday night by a woman passerby who reported the matter to the police.

She contacted the Police Control Room when she saw something moving inside the bag. The bag, she said, had been tossed out of a moving car, after which a stray dog pounced on it and dragged it around.

"The child was found in a rexine bag at the Kali Mata temple on Bangla Sahib road. We received a midnight call about it Friday, after which we took the child and admitted her at Kalawati Hospital," a police official said.

Miraculously, the infant had not suffered any injuries, doctors who examined her said. She was taken into the care of Udayan, an NGO that cares for orphans, at Gole Market, Saturday.

The nurse on duty at the care centre said: "The child has no sign of physical bruises and no infection. We will do a thorough investigation into her health."

"She is absolutely fine. She is not a cranky baby," the nurse added.

Reluctant to divulge more information about the child, the nurse said that since it was a weekend "most of the staff was off" and further information would be available only Monday.

The woman who witnessed the incident on Friday, told police in a statement that she had seen someone throw the bag from a white Maruti van. She, however, could not note down its number.

A case under section 317 has been registered against unknown people at the Mandir Marg Police Station and investigations are on, said a police official.

On Nov 19,a seven-month-old girl was found in a garbage dump in the Mangolpuri area in outer Delhi. In October, a girl child was found abandoned on the roadside in Aman Vihar area, again in outer Delhi.
