Pregnant woman injured in lathicharge

Mau: A pregnant woman was among a group of about 20 people injured in a police lathicharge as a demonstration against land acquisition for a government project turned violent at Chakia village here on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police Mahesh Kumar Mishra said police used force as villagers opposing land acquisition under Kanshiram Aavasiye Yojana, started pelting stones on the security personnel. Six of the injured were police men.

Earlier, the villagers were engaged in a heated argument with officials involved in the acquisition process.

The injury of all,, including that of the pregnant woman, was stated to be minor. No arrests had been made so far, sources said.

Kanshiram Aavasiye Yojana is a housing project for the poor people undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh Government.
