'Frankenstein' VHP has no control over Bajrang Dal

Nagpur: Some fringe groups and individuals from the saffron brigade are now beyond the realms of their creators - the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha.
Bajrang Dal, the VHP's fiery youth wing, is now beyond its control. If confronted, the Sangh rejects equating Bajrangi's with terrorists, but insiders say RSS has been maintaining a distance from the wing that enjoys a free hand from its parent organisation, the VHP, and mentors in the RSS. "The RSS communicates with Bajrang Dal through VHP, if ever," says an insider. "Bajrang Dal has always been under VHP eyes, but now there are elements in the wing that are even beyond the control of the VHP leaders," he reveals.
In mid-eighties, the VHP formed the Bajrang Dal in a bid to step up the Ayodhya campaign and bring in the much-needed aggression.
The force needed boys who dared to risk lives. The cadres would usually be the dropouts or street-smart youths coming from run-down localities or lower classes, but mostly Hindus. "I was rejected by its regional convener for my sophistication, though I wished to join Bajrang Dal in my studentship," says a former ABVP volunteer.
They don't want middle-class educated youths, but gutsy rough-and-tough guys who would not blink twice before giving life or taking one, says the ex-volunteer, a staunch Sangh follower. The indoctrination of the fresh recruits is done through the camps, where military training is also imparted.
