Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress today demanded an immediate stop to police atrocities on tribals in Jhargram in West Midnapore district and said the government should ban the Maoists.

Senior Trinamool Congress member Saugata Roy told the West Bengal Assembly that after the landmine explosion at Salbani on November 2, the police were committing excesses on tribals at Lalgarh which prompted them to block highways and dig up roads. This has led to the stir spreading to neighbouring Bankura and Purulia.

Asserting that his party does not support Maoists, he said that the state government should ban the ultra outfit.

He said that Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had suggested an all-party meeting on the Lalgarh stir as the state administration and the police had failed to tackle the situation.

Roy alleged that the tribals had been a deprived lot for a long time and that development work in their areas should be speeded up.

CPI-M members on the other hand charged the Trinamool Congress with being hand-in-glove with the Maoists and said that they were trying to create anarchy and terror in the state.
