Bhopal: A day after a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sunil Nayak was shot dead in Madhya Pradesh's Tikamgarh town, tension prevailed Friday in the curfew bound region, police said.

Nayak, a candidate for the assembly polls, was shot dead Thursday near a polling booth in Nayakhera area of Tikamgarh town in the district of the same name at about 5.40 p.m. The former minister was hit by bullets in his head and neck, and died on the way to Jhansi, where he was being rushed for treatment.

An indefinite curfew was clamped in the town Thursday evening as hundreds of people took to the streets to protest Nayak's murder.

"People again came out Friday and pelted stones at the police station. A police inspector suffered head injuries. Mild force had to be used to disperse the crowd. Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Pravin Kumar has been suspended for dereliction of duty," Director General of Police S.K. Raut said.

Congress candidate from Prithvipur, Brijendra Singh Rathore's brother Yashpal Rathore, was alleged to have shot at Nayak. He was arrested on the charge of murder, said Tikamgarh Collector K.P. Rahi.

Nayak, though contesting on a BJP ticket, was a former aide of Bharatiya Jan Shakti (BJS) party's founder-president Uma Bharati. Soon after getting the report of Nayak's murder, Bharati took to the streets and blocked traffic outside the police station at Nayakhera.
