Kolkata: Industrialist Ashok Todi filed a bail application in the Calcutta High Court today, a day after he was sent to judicial custody for 12 days by a city court for allegedly abetting the suicide of his son in-law Rizwanur Rahman.
Todi, who complained of chest pain and was admitted to the jail hospital after he was taken to Presidency Jail yesterday, prayed for bail on the ground of ill health. His counsel Joymalyo Bagchi said the application was likely to be taken up tomorrow by a division bench headed by Justice Amit Talukdar. In his prayer, Todi also submitted that Rizwanur had exonerated him by stating in his suicide note that he did not have anything against his father-in-law as he was a father after all.
Todi surrendered before metropolitan magistrate Madhumita Ray at the Bankshall court yesterday on a Supreme Court directive. The CBI has accused him, two of his relatives, three police officers and an alleged conduit of abetting to suicide, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy. Computer graphics teacher Rizwanur had married Todi's daughter Priyanka, who was once his student, in August last year and a month later his body was found beside railway tracks, several kilometres away from his home. It was alleged that Rizwanur had been summoned to the city police headquarters here at the bidding of Todi and his relatives and was forced to allow his wife to go back to her parents, a few days after which he committed suicide.
