Mamta for new project in Singur
Tuesday, December 02, 2008 19:15 [IST]
Singur: Accusing the Tata Motors of holding the Singur land without any purpose, Trinamool Congress (TC) Chief Mamta Banerjee today asked the State Government to take back the land for starting another industrial project through a global tender.

"Tata has the habit of acquiring land and hold it for no purpose. Such was the case in Bangladesh, Orissa, Chennai and now in West Bengal," Banerjee alleged.

She said that the state government should start a new industrial project on the 600 acres of land, which was earlier provided to the Tatas for the much talked about Rs one lakh Nano car factory.

"It is urgent to take back the land from Tatas as soon as possible so that a new project could be started in Singur," she said adding "the government should start the project through global tender to maintain transparency.

"Farmers will work in the remaining 400 acres after prior announcement of the date," the TC leader told a public rally here.

Earlier in October this year, Ratan Tata was forced to pull out of West Bengal over the land acquisition issue and shifted the ambitious Nano car project to Gujarat.

Criticising the state government, Banerjee said that it had failed to create industrial environment in the West Bengal.

She also announced the name of Feroza Bibi as the TC candidate for the Nandigram by-election to the state assembly. Feroza's son was killed by CPI(M) workers last year.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader Balai Sapui lodged an FIR with the Singur police station for an attack on him, allegedly by TC workers in Singur area.

He said that his car was also damaged in the attack.
