Tuesday, December 02, 2008 19:38 [IST]

New Delhi: The ministry of railways Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs.1 million each for the families of all passengers and railway staff who died in the Nov 26 terror attack at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in Mumbai.

The attack at the CST has left 58 people dead, including one Government Railway Police official, one home guard and three other employees.

“The Railways will give Rs.50,000 to each passenger and staff who were injured in the attack and job to one family member of those who died,” Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav told reporters here.

The minister also announced special award of Rs.1 million each to Vishnu Dattaram Jhande and Jullu yadav, two railway employees who helped save many lives by their timely interventions.

Jhande, an announcer at the CST, made timely announcements at the time of attack that helped the panicked people to escape from the scene, while Yadav, a head constable, helped passengers reach safe places.

Apart from that, the minister has also announced an award of Rs.500,000 each to two Railway Protection Force staff, who fought the terrorist inside the terminus.

"Without their quick thinking and common sense, the toll would have been much higher," the minister said.
