Pak parties back govt in tackling situation
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 00:24 [IST]

Islamabad: Pakistan's political parties today extended their support to the government for defending the country's security interests and dealing with tensions with India in the wake of the terror attacks in Mumbai.

At a conference on national security chaired by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, leaders of all political parties adopted a unanimous resolution extending their backing to the government and armed forces in dealing with the situation.

The six-hour meeting was attended by federal ministers, senior security officials and representatives of political parties, including opposition PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan.

The resolution said the political parties "took strong exception to the unsubstantiated allegations made in haste against Pakistan" following the attacks in Mumbai.

The parties pointed out that Pakistan had condemned the "reprehensible terrorist attacks". The people of Pakistan shared the grief of Indians and had extended their sympathy to the families of the victims, the resolution said.

The resolution underscored the "steadfast resolve of the Pakistani nation to defend its honour and dignity as well as Pakistan's sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity".

It said "all political parties and democratic forces firmly support the government and the armed forces of Pakistan in defending Pakistan's security interests".
