Kolhapur: The senate of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, today granted the proposal to honour Bangladeshi Nobel laureate Professor Muhommad Yunus with D Litt in a separate convocation ceremony.
The proposal for D Litt to Professor Yunus was forwarded by Vice-Chancellor Dr Manikrao Salunkhe to Chancellor on August 28,2008. Chancellor of Universities in Maharashtra, cleared the proposal on November 10,2008
Professor Muhommad Yunus is a Bangladeshi banker and an economist. Previously he was a professor in Economics and is famous for his successful application of micro credit, the extension of small loans. These loans are given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans.
Yunus is also the founder of Grameen Bank. In 2006, Professor Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to create economic and social development.
Professor Yunus has received several other national and international honours. He is now serving as a member of Director Board of United Nations Foundation. The Professor is the recipient of Gandhi Peace Pize (Year 2000).
When he receives the D Litt from Shivaji University it will be his 30th one.
