Terrorists must not know what we know: Rice
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 16:12 [IST]

New Delhi: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Wednesday said that there had to be a "wall" so that terrorists did "not know what we know" through the media.

"I respect the role of the media. But there is an important wall so that terrorists not know what we know," she told reporters here.

Rice commented that while the media was very active in a democracy, some discretion had to be exercised in terms of releasing information on investigations into terrorist activities.

"They (terrorists) are very quick to react when they have leads," he said.

There has been strong domestic criticism about the role of the Indian media during the 60-hour long operation, with accusations that operational details were divulged during the live television commentary.

Indian Navy chief Sureesh Mehta had Tuesday publicly blamed the electronic media for its unrestrained coverage. "It requires a certain amount of restraint when it is an ongoing operation. Do we really need to see it minute by minute? Because there are tactical implications…," he said at a press conference.

"Everywhere the media is an enabling instrument, but here it is a disabling instrument,” he added.
