IAF on alert to thwart possible air borne strikes
Thursday, December 04, 2008 15:35 [IST]

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) Thursday increased vigil to counter any air borne terror threat after Defence Minister A.K. Antony sounded a high-alert about "terror from air", a top official said.

IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal Fali H. Major, after a function here on the occasion of Navy Day Thursday, said the force was prepared.

"This is based on a warning which has been received by the government and we are prepared as usual," Major told reporters.

In the light of this, all major airports across the country have been put on high alert. IAF's fighter jets have also been put on a stand by.

This followed an instruction from Antony given at a meeting here Wednesday, attended by Defence Secretary Vijay Singh and the three Services chiefs Admiral Sureesh Mehta, General Deepak Kapoor and Air Chief Marshal Fali H. Major.

"The defence minister has reviewed the details of the preparedness against any possible terror threat from air," a defence official here said.

Antony called for greater synergy amongst defence forces and internal security agencies and for beefing up coastal security.
