New Delhi: Attacking BJP and a section of the media for advocating a US-type response to the Mumbai terror attacks, the CPI(M) today said such a move would only result in what terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) want.
Observing that after the attack on the Twin Towers, the Bush Administration had waged a war against Iraq which had "nothing whatsoever" to do with the terror strike, the party said military strikes against targets in Pak-occupied Kashmir "will surely provoke a war" with Pakistan.
"The result would be exactly what the extremist outfits like LeT want," CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.
In an editorial in the latest issue of People's Democracy , he said what was required was not a war with Pakistan "but to ensure that strong action is taken against terrorist organisations and personnel in that country".
Noting that the issue was to get the Pakistani government act against extremist groups, Yechury said all evidence collected should be presented to that goernment which should be asked to act promptly.
"If they do not respond, then India should take the matter to the UN Security Council under its Resolution 1373 which asks all states to take steps to prevent commission of terror acts, deny safe havens to those who finance, plan or support these activities," Yechury said.
The Security Council, he said, should be urged to ask Pakistan to take necessary measures to apprehend the culprits responsible and suppress their organisations. Source : PTI
