Needy Parsis' wait for home prolonged
Friday, December 05, 2008 03:26 [IST]
Mumbai: Needy Parsis wait for a new house got longer on Thursday as the joint charity commissioner (JCC) granted a 10-day extension to the Bombay Parsi Punchayet Trust (BPP), which had to consider allotment of houses to 104 Parsis. The hearing of the cases will now be held on December 11. The BPP had on November 16 already sought more time to consider these cases, which had been cleared by the earlier trust.

Joint charity commissioner N Deshmukh said, "Provide us with a list of the people you have considered amongst the 104 who are fit to be allotted houses. Until such time, no fresh allotment of houses will be allowed. You have to show that you are doing something on the housing issue."

Members of the Parsi community strongly feel that the new trust has been trying to pass on the houses to the rich instead. Kersi Randeria of Alert Zoroastrian Association alleged, "People have waited for years. Even the names they are considering are not the ones on the list of 104. They should show the list of people whom they have considered from the original list of 104 whose names have appeared in newspapers."

Rozbeh Sattarwala said, "My family applied for a house over 40 years ago, but no luck so far."

Arnanvaz Daryuwalla, 30,who lives with her two sisters in a hostel, said, "The Punchayet knows everything but they still dont allot a house," she said.
