Mumbai: Suave, articulate media-friendly and a MBA holder, 50 years young Ashok Chavan is from Nanded, Marathwada. He has held important posts like Minister of State for Public Works, Urban Development and Home in March 1993. Chavan started his political career in 1987, when he was elected to Lok Sabha from Nanded.
In 1999, he was elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly from Mudkhed constituency and was the Cabinet minister for Revenue and Protocol.
In 2003, he became minister for Transport, Ports, Cultural Affairs and Protocol.
In 2004, Chavan became Minister for Industries, Mining, Cultural Affairs & Protocol.
From 1995 to 1999, Chavan was General Secretary of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
The signs are ominous for Maharashtra’s new chief minister Ashok Chavan. Uncertainty looms over one of the most industrialised states in the country, as he prepares to take charge.
The state’s image has taken a beating in the recent past. The attacks on North Indians, followed by last week’s terror tragedy, have already tarnished Maharashtra’s industrial climate. And now, the prospect of political instability makes the challenge before Mr Chavan even tougher.
