Two girls allegedly molested in Gurgaon
Saturday, December 13, 2008 18:20 [IST]

New Delhi: Two girls have complained to the police here that they were molested and beaten up by their landlord Saturday.

"The incident took place at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when our landlord entered our room in a drunken state," the victims told the police. The girls, both tribals from Manipur, were working at a call centre in Chandigarh and had come to Gurgaon to search of a new job. They had taken the room in DLF Phase-I only two days ago. "The landlord attempted to molest the girls. Somehow one of them escaped and informed the northeast community leaders in Gurgaon who rushed to the spot to help them. Meanwhile, the landlord and his son assembled their supporters and severely beat them up," said North East Support Centre and Helpline spokesperson Madhu Chandra.

One of the girls had suffered serious injuries in her limbs and face and has been admitted to a hospital, Chandra said, adding the police was informed about the matter but no one has been arrested as yet. "We have registered a case in this matter and are investigating. No one has been arrested as yet," Station House Officer DLF Phase-I Gulam Mohammad told IANS. Chandra said they wanted the police register a case under the Prevention of SC/ST Atrocity Act, 1995,and had approached the senior police officers, who assured that action will be taken up against the landlord and his son. The North East Support Centre and Helpline is combined initiative of human rights activists, social workers, students, journalists and lawyers seeking to prevent harassment and abuses meted out to women, northeast people and tribal communities of different states.
