No honking campaign launched to check pollution
Saturday, December 13, 2008 23:06 [IST]

New Delhi: With the increasing sound pollution becoming a major health hazard for the city dwellers, an NGO today launched "no honking" campaign to check noise in the National Capital Region.

The campaign, launched by The Earth Saviours Foundation and JK Tyre Limited and supported by Delhi Traffic Police, is directed to all vehicle drivers, pursuing them to "press horn only when it is necessary."

As part of the drive, taxi, auto, bus drivers and other vehicle owners will be educated on the health problems caused by honking and road show will be held to highlight the problem.

The campaign was launched by Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police S N Srivastava and former Joint Commissioner Maxwell Periera at a function here.

"We will convince people on the issue and try to make them a part of the campaign, so that they could also increase awareness among others," said Ravi Kalra, president, the Earth Saviours Foundation.

The organisation has also proposed to observe January one a "No Honking Day" to promote the cause. The first week of January is already being observed as the Road Safety Week.
