New Delhi: Taking a lesson from the last month's terror attack at Mumbai's CST station, the Railways has decided to "fortify" stations in all the four metros by equipping them with sophisticated and hi-tech gizmos.
The soon to be installed state-of-the art integrated security system to be set up at the stations will include closed circuit television cameras, personal and baggage screening system, explsoive detection devices and disposal facility, a senior Railway Ministry official said.
The system will first be set up at Delhi, New Delhi and Nizamuddin railway stations in the capital on a priority basis, the official said.
Besides the three stations in Delhi, the system will also be installed in Mumbai's Church Gate and CST station, Howrah and Sealdah in Kolkata and Chennai Central and Egmore stations in Chennai, the official said.
Tendering process is on to procure sophisticated equipment for these stations, he said. The decision to strengthen security system at the stations was taken keeping in mind the changed scenario in the country in the wake of terror attack at the CST station that killed more than 50 people.
Though Railways has identified 140 stations across the country as sensitive, he said it has been decided to take up the work at the eight stations in the first phase.
Railways would also be acquiring electronic access control system to be installed at the sensitive stations from firms dealing with state-of-the-art security system.
The security system will be set up at more than 100 stations across the country at a cost of Rs 600 crore.
